The story of Sennelier started in 1887 when Gustave Sennelier, a chemist, opened his first store on the left bank of the river Seine in Paris, right across the Louvre museum, and next to the most famous art school in Paris, Ecole des Beaux-Arts. After selling paints from various manufacturers, he started making his own paints to achieve the best quality from the best raw materials from all over Europe.
Thanks to his know how in mixing pigments and binding colors, his shop quickly became a landmark for various
famous artists, including Picasso, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Dali, Cézanne. Upon the request of Picasso, Henri
Sennelier, Gustave's son, invented the first oil pastel, to be used on any surface. The continuous interaction
with masters of art allowed Sennelier to develop unique techniques and colors. Playing with
