At the end of the XIXth century, Gustave Sennelier developed
the Sennelier range of extra
soft "à l'écu" pastels.
This collection created the largest chromatic pastel spectrum.
The collection was further developed in 1948 and at the beginning
of the new millennium.
The Landscape
set offers a panorama of colors expressly chosen for landscape
painting, featuring unique greens and browns not
found in any other pastel range.
The Portrait
set offers a selection of colors expressly chosen for portrait
painting, featuring unique flesh tones not
found in any other pastel range.
Gustave Sennelier opened the doors of the Maison Sennelier at
3 Quai Voltaire in 1887. This Parisian landmark faces the Louvre
on the Left BankLeft BankLeftBank, just around the corner from the École
des Beaux Arts. Artists like Cézanne, Gauguin, Monet, Bonnard,
Soutine, Picasso, Modigliani, Kandinsky, and Dali made this place
a historic rendez-vous. A place where the most celebrated names
could find the finest colors available for artists.

Sennelier circles the globe to find classic pigments such as cobalt, cadmiums and
Italian earths that possess qualities that are both beautiful and unique.
Rare and precious pigments such as genuine cinnabar, lapis lazuli, gamboge, malachite,

One of the ingredients is one of the finest chalk known in the world: the "Craie Champenoise", coming from the Champagne area of France (the Champagne wine is matured in the same craie caves!). Unlike other pastels, Sennelier pastels are pure pigment,
giving the maximum lightfastness and do not contain any clay, which dull the pastel's color.
